Ever wondered how an A/C system works?
A blower pushes air through the evaporator coil (equipment usually located in a closet or attic)
This coil (if in cooling mode) will be Cold. Then the ductwork (if not a ductless system) will distribute the cool air throughout the supply air registers. Since air passes through the system, the air may have dirt. Which will eventually accumulate anywhere along the surfaces that it travels. Therefore, a filter is required to keep the evaporator coil clean.
If the system has a dirty coil or filter. The system will at first began working harder, thus consuming more energy. As it continues it will then freeze up. Ice will build up in the coil, because the coil is cold and no air is passing through due to dirt blocking the path. So eventually, the Compressor which is the heart of the system, will likely burn and if this occurs you will need a new equipment.
It is important to check the temperature split and refrigerant level to make sure you're system does not have any leaks. When you find them in time you may save the compressor/system.
A capacitor with low charge is advised to be replaced. If the condenser fan capacitor goes out the compressor will overheat and go out.
